January-Member of the Month

Congratulations to our first Member of the Month for 2018- Rachel Bhan! We wanted to start this year off with a bang, and Rachel is just that. Since joining CrossFit, Rachel has been a spokesperson for the phrase, “actions speak louder than words”. Though she is a full time (very successful) working girl, she also takes care of very active teen (and even better, pre-teen) daughters. Her husband has joined on the health journey with her, and you may see her and Ashish together, or at separate times during the day. She has lost over 101 POUNDS since this journey with us, and though she pretends like she “can’t” do certain things, Rachel has proven she can do ANYTHING that she sets her mind to. Continue reading to read Rachel’s testimony, because her words are true, genuine, and very motivating:

What does CFL mean to you?

My husband, Ashish convinced me to take the “free” Crossfit class four years ago.  At my heaviest, I was 250 pounds.  After I had my second baby, I just packed on the weight.  I was having a tough time balancing a career, two small children and functioning on NO sleep. It was a tough time in my life.  I wasn’t willing to let my career take a nose dive.  I was in the top 1% of State Farm Agents in the country before I had children and I wanted to maintain that ranking even after having children.  The good news, I did it.  I received every pin, plaque, and medal the Company had to offer,  I was even invited to the New York Stock Exchange for the success I had in financial service and appeared in two State Farm commercial, but it took a toll on my health.

I walked into the 5:30 pm class and thought I was on the set of the movie 300.  I thought to myself, ‘No Way” and I almost got back into my car until the coach stopped me. If you don’t know who I am, you can generally spot me fairly easily.  I do EVERY WOD modified.  So when the coaches tell you to get all the equipment you need for your workout.  My area looks like the kids play zone you see at the mall.  No Joke!

So if you are reading this and have always wanted to try Crossfit and feel it may be “too much” for you?  Think of me.  I am 47 years old and I am a working mom.  I own a business, married for 17 years, two daughters (Ashima 15 & Aashna 11) who run us ragged with all their activities, and I’m at least 20 years OLDER than all the others in every Crossfit class.  Do I belong? HELL YA! So what if I can’t do an overhead squat and I use a dozen bands to do a pull up.  I am still a hardworking woman who wants to live a long life.

In the past four years since I’ve joined CFL, I have gone from 250 pounds to 149 pounds. I am down 101 pounds.  I went from size 26 to a size 6.  I can finally keep up with my two daughters.  I have climbed Machu Piccu, zip lined through the rainforests of Thailand, white water rafted in Costa Rica, completed obstacle courses high above the Redwood Forests, gone on EVERY rollercoaster with my daughters (since I am way BELOW the weight requirement)……and the list continues to grow each year.

Thank you to my family at CFL….what a journey it’s been!
& Thank you Rachel. We cant wait to see how far you’ll go!
