September- Member of the Month
Congratulations to our SEPTEMBER member of the month- Wendy Roxas! Our MOM lets us highlight one our special members so we can all get to know them a little better. As our community continues to grow at CFL, we want everyone to feel like a family, no matter what hour of the day you attend. With our MOM, you get to know some fun things about members from all hours of the day!
Wendy Roxas, we feel like we’ve watched her grow into an athlete right before our eyes. She started out taking Boot Camp at CFL 1.0, where Matt would often get on her for not attending CrossFit. She said she “wasn’t ready”, until the day she finally made the switch. Now, shes hooked, making PR’s, and never turning back! Wendy’s enthusiasm for bettering herself is wildly contagious. She is such a fun person to coach, soaking up every bit of information you can give her. She never gives anything less than her best. She also has got her husband, Bill, involved. You also might know them from their adorable children who play quietly together in the kids room while Mom or Dad gets in a workout. Wendy always has a smile on her face, is willing to lend an ear as a friend, and is a huge asset to the community at CFL. Thank you Bill and Wendy for being the first people to show up on moving day. You say you’re happy to have us, but we feel the same Wendy! Congratulations.
When did you start CrossFit? October 2016. I’m looking froward to my first anniversary!
Whats your favorite class to attend? I’m typically at 6:30pm but I will come any time I can.
When is your birthday? May 7, 1982.
What would you sing at Karaoke? Definitely Escape (the Pina Colada song) by Rupert Holmes.
What motivates you to work hard? Progress. Seeing progress propels me. At Crossfit, I feel like I am always noticing measurable steps forward and that’s addicting.
What is your favorite cheat meal? Anything with cream cheese, chocolate or bacon. And wine – does wine count as a meal?
List your three best personality traits: I try to be honest, friendly and reliable.
List your three worst personality traits: I interrupt, jump to conclusions and can have a short temper at times.
What are 5 things you enjoy outside of the gym?: My family, camping, vegetable gardening, paleo cooking and holistic living.
Make up your favorite crossfit workout: I’d like to see single-unders and jumping pull-ups programmed in. I’d RX the hell out of it:)
What would be your least favorite CrossFit workout? Ugh, a tie between burpee box jumps and anything with the assault bike.
What does CFL mean to you? I can’t overstate how grateful I am for CFL. For many years, I took care of an ill family member and had very little time for myself. Since becoming free to branch out a bit, I am so glad I ended up here. In the beginning, a pre-existing shoulder injury had me worried that I wouldn’t be able to see it through. That after wanting to to try Crossfit for so long, I might have to give it up because of the pain I was in. But Matt’s guidance and encouragement really changed things for me. He helped troubleshoot my issues, encouraged me to seek a diagnosis and work through PT. He (and Jess and Vince and everyone else) modified every workout around my issues so that I could still participate. I remember asking Matt if I should just stay home on the days when we were snatching or cleaning or pressing and he said absolutely not. That if I wanted to work out, he would find something for me. So here I am, not quite a year later, able to do all of that without the pain. In the meantime, I’ve gone from never being able to stick to a fitness program to guarding my time at CFL like my life depends on it. And I can keep up with my kids! I couldn’t ask for better instruction or a more supportive community. Thank you!
